Is coaching right choice for you?
Coaching is all about asking powerful questions to create meaningful insights for the person being coached. Mentoring is about telling useful stories to inspire the person being mentored. Counselling is typically employed when an individual has got some signs of depression or has some clinical challenges that need to be addressed.
If you think the problem or challenge on hand could be resolved by having a conversation with yourself (like a mirror), going deep within, coaching would be the right choice. It really helps when one wants to focus on improving specific skills/behaviours that can help them take a leap in their professional or personal life.
The process of coaching works completely on mutual trust. The coach and client should have a trusted relationship to be open and honest to make progress in the coaching relationship. You could explore a few coaches until you find the right fit, just like how you would choose the right physician, after exploring many.
Unlike mentors who share their experiences on specific topics, coaches need not be subject matter experts. All that the coach needs to be able to do is to ask powerful questions that can take the client go deeper inside themselves to come up with solutions on their own.
